Malt Extract Agar (MEA) – 100 g

This mix is designed for mushroom tissue culture work. It combines high-quality malt extract, peptone G (a digest of gelatin), dextrose, and a clean agar base. Together, these ingredients provide a nutrient-rich, reliable medium for steady mycelium growth.

A 100 g bag will make about 1.8 liters of MEA solution, enough to pour roughly 70–80 standard 100 mm Petri dishes.

Formula (by weight):

  • 35.7% Malt Extract

  • 1.8% Peptone G (pancreatic digest of gelatin)

  • 35.7% Dextrose

  • 26.8% Agar

Preparation steps:

  1. Dissolve 100 g of MEA powder into 1.8 L of distilled water.

  2. Bring the mixture to a boil while stirring to fully dissolve.

  3. Sterilize in an autoclave at 121 °C for 15 minutes.

  4. Pour into sterile Petri dishes inside a still air box or flow hood.

Lab tip: Always let your agar cool just enough to handle comfortably before pouring—too hot and you’ll get excess condensation, too cold and it will start to solidify in the flask.
